Bad Qualities

Embodiments of Love!

As long as man has ego and pomp, no one will love him. His own children and his own wife will not love him. Ego and pomp-and-show make love distant from man. The day that this ego and pomp-and-show is gone from man, the whole world will love him.

Therefore, every single man who wishes for the world to love him has to put ego, pomp-and-show distant. The man who is full of anger will not see happiness anywhere. He is always in sorrow. Both outside and inside, the fruit of anger is only sorrow. It cannot be anything else. Therefore, the main reason for the sorrow of man is anger only.

Embodiments of Love!

As long as there are desires, man cannot see happiness. The day man destroys desires, that day every happiness will be experienced by him. As long as greed is there, man cannot be happy. Only when greed is lost, every happiness will be attained. Therefore, by having desire, anger, greed and infatuation, man will get sorrow, grief, and lack of peace.

When the new year has started, every single man is wondering, "How will it be in the next year?" It is not the new year. It is not the new month. It is not the new day. It is not a new minute.

The prosperity of the country depends upon man’s body. Man’s actions are dependent on his mind. Mind depends upon his resolves (sankalpa). The actions will be as the resolves are. Therefore, the man who wishes for the prosperity of the universe should make his resolves good ones. This world will have peace and safety if man has good resolves.

Sanctify Actions

Human life is not only associated with birth and death. It has many other facets. Therefore, all of man’s resolves are based on his actions. The whole world is dependent upon actions. In creation, preservation and destruction also, actions are binding man. Merit and sin also are bound by man’s actions. Bliss and sorrow also are dependent upon man’s actions. However, man, not able to understand this truth, is doing actions according to his whim.

At the time of doing actions, he experiences bliss. However, afterwards the results of these actions will give to him mountains and mountains of sorrow. Even when he does a very small action, he can’t escape experiencing the result. Therefore, it is essential that man recognises and practises this truth.

When he starts any small act, he should begin to enquire, "Is it good or bad? Is it right or wrong?" Don’t enter into actions hastily. Haste makes waste. Waste makes worry. So do not be in a hurry. Even when you undertake actions in haste, tomorrow you cannot escape experiencing the results of those actions.

Therefore, Upanishads say Tasmai Namah Karmane, "I offer salutations to my actions." (Sanskrit sloka) When I try to do any kind of action, first and foremost, I must first do namaskar to that action and do it.

Why should we do namaskar to action? "Oh God of action! Through me, do pure action. Make me do actions that will help others. Don't do through me actions that will hurt others." We have to do namaskar to every action and then only enter into it. In the culture of India, this is the main principle.

One small example: Before an artist begins a dance, before tying up the anklets, they will first take the anklets, press them to their eyes, do namaskar to them, and then only put them on their feet. Even the one who plays on the tabla, he will first do namaskar to the instrument before he begins. Then only he begins. The one who plays the harmonium also, first and foremost, he will do namaskar to the harmonium and then only begin.

First and foremost, sanctify every single action with prayers and make them good. Therefore from ancient times, these traditions in our India have been very important. Doing actions may be very easy, but bearing the results of actions are very difficult.

Don’t be satisfied that, ‘Yesterday I did an action. It’s all over.’ The action that you did is over. But the result of it will be with you. As long as you live, it will be troubling you. Therefore, being born as a human, having attained Divinity, having recognised God, we have to enter into good actions. Without these good actions, the whole life of man is a waste.

Unity of Thought, Word & Action

Therefore, Truth is Neethi (morality). Dharma is Reethi (procedure). Tyaaga (sacrifice) is Kyathi. The combination of these three - Neethi, Reethi and Kyathi, is the human race. Man of today has burnt these three, Neethi, Reethi and Kyathi. Therefore, humanness has gone totally. There is a doubt whether there is a true human being in the world.

Have pious thoughts. If these are good thoughts you are gifted with – but you are not bothered of the good latent in you. Tyaaga : sacrifice. Sacrifice is God’s gift. Good thoughts, wherefrom do you get? Everything is God’s gift. Head, what does it think? Head thinks of the external world: reading, writing, earning, constructing mansions, constructing multi-storeyed buildings, automobiles. They are all the gifts of the external trends of the mind. Who earned them all? In fact, there are certain inward attributes or qualities lying latent in you: compassion (daya), prema, forbearance, Truth (sathyam). They cannot be earned. All good thoughts come out of your heart. And all of the bad thoughts come out of your head.

Embodiments of Love!

Don’t follow your head. Head will put you to danger. Ultimately you will be beheaded. Never follow your head because you will drowned in the worldly life. Turn inward. Follow your heart. There, out of your heart, arise sacred thoughts. There are human values: Sathya, Dharma, Shanti, Prema, Ahimsa. They arise, emanate out of your heart. So, when once there is Truth (Sathya), all the rest like Dharma, servitude, Shanti, Prema and Ahimsa will follow.

The proper study of mankind is man. How is this man? The thought he thinks, the words he speaks, the action that he does, should all be harmonious. Nowadays we think one thing, say another and do another. Therefore, Kali Yuga is called ‘wicked’. Mind different, speech different and action different is wicked (Sanskrit sloka) You are not man. They call you wicked. Mind same, speech same, action same, is a Mahatma, a great one. (Sanskrit sloka) They call him a Mahatma.

No man wants to be wicked. He doesn’t desire it, but he is doing bad actions. Without knowing it, he is adding himself to the list of evil people. Therefore, Embodiments of Love! Human life is noble. It is so beautiful, full of character, full of noble conduct. Such a sacred human life is equal to the Divine. Where is God now? All of you are Embodiments of the Divine.

Body is a Temple

You take one small example: Body is the temple of God and the Indweller inside is eternal and Divine. (Sanskrit sloka) We are easily repeating it. We are easily leaving it. Don't give it up. The essence of all sadhanas is this only. This is the essence of all austerities. This is the essence of all goals.

We are considering it so unimportant. It is a big mistake, mistake, mistake. This body only is our temple. Who is in this temple? Atma is the God installed in this temple. This God that is installed is not one that moves. The body moves. But the God that is installed inside does not. Therefore we should not call him ‘not steady.’ He is steady.

Attributeless, ever shining, ancient, beautiful, eternal, pure, unsullied, unpolluted, immortal. (Sanskrit sloka) Atma resides in the body of man. Having a temple like that, keeping a God like that within you, where are you going to search after God? There are 6 crores of temples in the world. What are those temples? They are all human bodies. Every human body is a temple. The power of consciousness in everyone is God.

Therefore in what way do the Vedas teach? In all living creatures is Divinity. No one is believing in these true words. Therefore, whenever you see any person, you have to feel that it is like seeing a temple. In that temple, there is the embodiment of Atma, God. Therefore, we should not criticise anyone. We should not harm anyone. We should not cause trouble to anyone. We should not hurt anyone. The one who recognises this Truth is a true devotee.

Simply criticising others as much as one wants, blaming them, making fun of them and hurting them in so many ways, how will people who do like this be devotees? He is the meanest of all. We should not criticise anyone. If you blame anyone, it will be like you are blaming the God whom you worship.

This body is a temple. How sacred it is! Therefore we have to feel that this body is a temple. First and foremost, we have to respect the body. If anyone sees this temple of the body nowadays, they get disgusted. They say, "Uck! Where did this disgusting body come from!" It is very wrong. It may be a neglected temple, but it is a temple all the same. Therefore, we should not be carried away by the beauty of the temple. We have to see the God inside, the embodiment of Atma of the temple, and be blissful.

Emperor Ashok

We have to undertake good actions with this temple. There is a small example for this. Emperor Ashok was ruling. He used to collect taxes according to custom. If he did not collect taxes, it would be very difficult to rule the kingdom.

Ministers nowadays are the same. If they do not collect taxes, in what way can they rule things? How can they provide conveniences to the people? It is so crazy to say, "Don't collect taxes, but provide conveniences to the people!" Taxes must be collected. Conveniences must be arranged with it.

In that way, King Ashok collected taxes and ruled the kingdom. His birthday came. Everyone under him came foreword with the taxes. They filled mountains and mountains! (An expression meaning that they filled the treasury boxes!). The King of Maghada came with empty hands. Ashok realised this truth. He asked, "King Maghada! Don't you know that today is my Birthday? Why have you come with empty hands?"

Then King Maghada said, "Oh King! This year we had serious drought in my kingdom. All the tax which I had collected, I used it to reduce the troubles of the people. I gave water conveniences to the people and built hospitals for the welfare of the people. There was no water to drink. Therefore, I have given drinking water to the people. I built hospitals for the people who are suffering, being ill. Then, small children are going bad. So I built schools for them. Therefore all the taxes have been spent."

King Ashok was extremely happy with this. He said, "Oh King Maghada! Come near." Emperor Ashok sat King Maghada on his throne and said, ‘The great work that you are doing in this kingdom, no one else is doing. You are supplying water, giving medical attention and arranging for schools. Due to these three sacred actions, the whole world is experiencing so much happiness. Therefore, I will certainly give help to you who have arranged so many good things."

Have you seen? Even Ashok of those days was Dharmic and had a good character of sacrifice. His name was A-(negative) shoka (sorrow). He had no sorrow at all. The King of Maghada melted the heart of Ashok, who had such a pure heart. What kind of action did it?

The poor suffer unnecessarily. Natural, cool water should be offered. Hospitals should be constructed. Students should be educated. Education is only related to the head. Medical attention has to do with the heart. Water is related to the whole body. The one who gives the three of these is a great person.

Ashok said this. He is also God. But he lived as a human being. So they gave the name of Emperor to him. He attained good fame like this by sacred sacrifice, with sacred Yoga and by sacred actions. Good actions are very important. The man that does a good act excels all others.

Therefore, I am telling now and then, ‘You take part in service to society.’ Why should you take part in it? You were born in society. You have grown in society. You have earned money in society. You have been educated in society. You have gained full bliss due to society. Is it not necessary to show gratitude to society which has given you such great joy? Therefore, you have to show your gratitude to that society. To show that gratitude, good actions should be done in society. We have to do service to everyone in society. Why? Because the body is a temple and the eternal Indweller is God. All bodies are God's bodies.

God Only Blesses

Embodiments of Love!

There is no need to worry about what kind of troubles will happen in the new year. If our actions are good, the whole future will be good. If our actions are sacred, the whole future will be sacred. Therefore, the whole prosperity of the country depends upon your actions.

God will never punish and He will never protect. That which protects is you to yourself. That which punishes is you to yourself. God blesses, ‘So be it, so be it, so be it,’ for everything. If you have said any bad thing, He says ‘So be it, so be it, so be it.’ If you say anything good, ‘So be it, so be it, so be it.’ Therefore, God only blesses. But the main reason for good and bad is you only.

The world today is in utter confusion. Truly there is no humanness to be seen anywhere. What is ‘humanness’? Is the body with the five senses, which has in it desire, anger, infatuation, envy and jealousy, ‘humanness’? The senses must be experienced. However, they must be experienced in the right way. However, there are other things arising out of your heart. The heart gives pure, good feelings. Develop those good feelings. You are taking these good feelings and putting them aside. You are using the bad qualities that you are developing with food and pastimes.

Embodiments of Love!

Where does this desire and anger come from? They are coming from the food that we eat. Therefore, you only are the reason for these evil qualities. Take good food. Take satwic food. Good feelings will arise.

Bulbs and Current

One example: There are so many lights seen here. The bulbs are shining. What is the reason for these bulbs to shine? Due to the current being here. Where does this current come from? It comes from the wire. Therefore, Truth, which is the current, arrives in the wire of Dharma, and, due to it entering into the bulb of Shanti, the brightness of Love shines.

What is responsible for making this light of Love? The main reason is the bulb of Peace. What is the main cause for this bulb of Peace? It is due to the wire of Dharma. What is the main cause behind this wire? It is due to the current of Truth. Therefore, when Truth, Dharma, Peace and Love are all one, you will be a true human being. In human beings today, these four are not there. Then how is it possible to say that he is a human being? It is not at all possible. He is like a dead body. This is all body without the essence. However, the essence should be in the body.

Embodiments of Love!

Having donned the human body, Human life is very difficult to obtain. (Sanskrit sloka) It can’t be bought. It can’t be borrowed. It can’t be taken on loan. It is the gift of God. Therefore, having the merit of donning the human body, it should be put on the right path. It has to be useful, giving help to others.

However, some people are there who, wherever you see them, they are blaming, blaming, blaming others. It may be the fruit of so many lives of actions. But we can’t say. How wrong it is to have those criticising words arising out of the mouth!

True Ornaments

Charity is the ornament for the hands. Truth is the ornament for the neck. The ornament for the ear is listening to the sacred scriptures. (Telugu poem) Therefore, why have the hands been given? Not to fight with others. Charity is the ornament for the hands.

Truth is the ornament for the neck. What is the true necklace for our neck? Not a necklace of white stones, not a necklace of diamonds, not a necklace of precious stones. God gave us the necklace of Truth. Bangles don't give beauty. Sacrifice is Beauty. Why has He given ears? Ears are not given to listen to gossip and vain talk. They are to listen to and contemplate on the Name of God and to listen to pure feelings.

Then, why did He give the eyes? You do not tire of seeing any number of cinemas every day, but eyes are not prepared to see the beautiful Divine form. (Telugu song) What are these eyes for? They are to see the Grandeur of God, to see the Beauty of God. However, nowadays instead of using these eyes for seeing sacred sights, you are seeing all crazy, crazy things like TV’s and cinemas. For that reason, nowadays even very small children are getting eye troubles. In middle age, one gets cataracts.

I’m 75 years old, no cataract! (applause) Why? Because up to today I have not seen any cinema. What is that which should be seen? Should I see only the outer appearances? No, no! We have to see Reality. That is the form of God. That is what should be seen.

(Swami repeats OM) We should hear that sound. If anyone is fighting anywhere, we gather in groups there. Should you go running to see fighting? Chi, chi, chi! (expression of disgust) How impure your ears have become! Seeing all these, how impure your eyes have become! Make your eyes pure. You are ready to listen to stories and gossip of the neighbourhood. We have not come to listen to their gossip.

See the joke of the dance of the puppet! Don’t be proud of your beauty, youth or strength of your senses. Very soon old age will approach. Soon you will become old. It lies before you. You can’t see due to cataract; there are folds on the face, grey hair and legs that stagger. Children will laugh at you, calling you an old monkey. See the joke of the puppet. (Telugu poem)

All the youth of today are so proud of their strength, youth, beauty and power. How they are ruining their energy! They are destroying humanness. What will happen after old age comes? The eyes will not be able to see. All wrinkles will come. If others see, they will laugh at you. Is it their fault or your fault?

Why have you misused your body? Why have you used this body in a wrong way? Is this why the body has been given? No, no! Do good things. Do service to society. Help others. Give help to the poor. By good actions like this, it will serve you in the same way. Many foreigners are asking, "Swami! Although you are 75 years old, you are so strong and you are so good looking! I tell them, "I have three ‘P’s: purity, patience, and perseverance. If you have these three, you will also be strong at 75 years old."

Therefore, Beauty is not that which has to do with the body only. It is related to the mind. It is related to purity. People who have jealousy will say all sorts of things. So those who criticise others are terrible sinners. The worst of the sins is to criticise others. (Telugu poem). Don’t criticise anyone. God is in everyone. If they have anything wrong in them, convey to them that fault and try to correct them with good words.

Always Smiling Face

Only when you learn this type of path, you will become ones who will enter onto the right path. Is it the good path only to renounce everything, close the nose and turn a japamala? No, no, no! That is not the right path. Good feelings have to arise from within us. There should always be a smiling face, smiling face, smiling face. You should not at any time and to anyone show a caster oil face.

Happiness is union with God. The one who has this contemplation on God will always have bliss. In the world there are so many sorrows, troubles, losses and hurts. All of them will come. No matter how many come, you should remain smiling. Truly, whether you believe it or not, the troubles that I have, no one else has. One who fulfils desires will be praised. One who does not fulfil desires will be blamed. Both praise and blame are on man’s lip only. But they are not related at all to what is good and bad. Why does something that comes only from the lips affect the mind?

So, to Sai it is always, ‘Yes, yes, yes.’ Sri Satya Sai. These three ‘S’s are enough. Praise and blame comes to the one without these three. Sai says ‘Yes’ to those who say ‘Yes.’ To the one who says ‘No,’ Sai will say ‘No.’ He may say "No’ with the mouth, but actually to Sai everything is ‘Yes, yes, yes.’

You have to experience them yourself. But they will not come up to Me. Whoever criticises you, did they criticise you very strongly? It will merge into the air. It won’t come to Me. Or, if they criticise you inside themselves only, that will reach and remain with them only, but not with Me. No matter how they criticise, they won’t come to Me.

I am always happy. Happiness is my form. There is neither sorrow nor happiness. Who has sorrow? There is sorrow to those with body consciousness. Therefore, I do not have body consciousness. The body is all conscience. Everything in the world is conscious. Having to do with the Atma is Consciousness. Therefore, I am not conscience nor conscious. I am Consciousness. All are Consciousness.

Everyone are Embodiments of the Divine. If you contemplate on being the Embodiment of God, you won’t enter into bad actions. I am always telling our students: The students are very young. Youth is like a Golden Age. Don't you destroy it. It won’t come again after it has passed.

Two things are important: If it comes, it will not go. If it goes, it will not come again. This is the true Chaitanya (Consciousness). It won’t come, it won’t go. It is there only. That is the nature of Brahman. So, the nature of Divinity is that it won’t come and it won’t go. It remains constant. That which comes, will not go. That is Chaitanya (Consciousness). If it goes, it will not come back. Therefore, I tell my students that things of the world go and come, go and come, go and come.

Study ¼, Practise ¾

Students!

There is one thing which you have to know. All that you study is not full education. You are only studying one part (25%). There are three parts that you have not studied. When you pass these three (75%), you will be one who has studied humanness. One is secular knowledge. Then, what are the three parts? Not that which is studied from books. The three parts are there for us -that which has to be put into practise. So, to study is one part (25%) and to practise is three parts (75%). Only when these three come together, one will become a fully-educated person.

Just by reading a text, will you be an educated man? However, that is superficial knowledge. That is not general knowledge. After general knowledge, one has to go to practical knowledge. Only after reaching practical knowledge, there lies the true human strength. There lies man’s true powers. You have to attain powers like these. Then what you have studied will become sanctified.

It’s not so great just to study and get things by heart. We have to put them into practise. Three parts have to be practise. One part has to be studied with a book. You have to see that you don't forget that truth. Then you will earn a good name.

The New Year

Therefore, today is the New Year. Fill your heart with new feelings. Enjoy the new form of bliss. Share this bliss with others. Don't share it for money. Share it for Love. When that Love is there, there will be no place for desire, anger, infatuation, envy or jealousy. All of those come and go. They are all only passing clouds. We should not ruin our hearts due to these passing clouds.

Therefore, today is the New Year and what do you think it is? All the good and bad of the year depend upon the actions of man. It depends upon conduct. They depend upon the resolves of man. If your resolves are good, your future will be good. If your actions are good, the future will be good. All of the nation will become good.

You look after yourself. If everyone looks after themselves, everyone will be good. So, for the progress of the country, the world should be peaceful. If we earn Peace, we have to put it into action to some extent.
